Lisa Nel, BA(Comb) Hons, P.G.C.E., BACP(Accred) Director, I'm OK, You're OK
I'm OK, You're OK provides counselling services for children and young people, well-being training and supervision for schools & colleges, and a range of CPD training courses in counselling children and young people for counsellors and other professionals.
Our main purpose within schools and colleges is to help develop a comprehensive mental health and emotional well-being service, which is responsive, preventative and sustainable. This is provided through:
- A 12-year reputation for excellence: references from current school partners
- One to one emotional and mental health support ‘in-situ’ for 4-25 year olds, at a time of accelerating need yet reduced NHS and charity provision, which has left families, school staff and GPs struggling to safeguard and gain access to effective therapeutic support for all the children and young people who need it
- Experienced counsellors, recruited both for their success in working with vulnerable young people and the personal qualities such as integrity, warmth and confidence that enable them to work in a ‘joined-up way’ with young people, school staff, families and other agencies such as Parent Support Advisors, Social Care and CAMHS
- A robust model of school-based counselling including supporting documentation and information about counselling, safeguarding and well-being that will inspire confidence, trust and strong relationships
- Partnership working based upon an understanding of school systems and of the pressures upon everyone regarding time, communication, funding and outcomes
- Assessment using tools e.g. Young Person-CORE, the Strengths & Difficulties Questionnaire, to identify individual need and work efficiently towards therapeutic change through a flexible approach to the number of sessions
- Pro-active well-being and resilience TRAINING for staff, students and families by experienced school trainers through well-being INSET, participation in PSHE Programmes and and the sharing of resources both on and offline. Our purpose is to help build an emotionally healthier, mutually supportive community with less need for counselling!
- Counselling for school staff and Supervision for Pastoral Staff at the front-line of supporting pupil well-being
- 360-degree joint evaluation, both quantitative and qualitative, to maintain and continue developing the best possible service
- Fair costing: balancing awareness of restricted school budgets and the essential need to recruit and retain the professional team who really can make a difference
More school-based counselling so urgently needed!
Survey shows many NHS Children's Mental Health Services facing downsizing or closure 22nd May, 2017

Chair of BACP, Andrew Reeves said: ‘These results – part of a much wider NHS survey – only serve to highlight the need for school-based counselling, something BACP has long campaigned for. School-based counselling can provide an early intervention to stop conditions accelerating into something more serious and complex, and is quicker and easier for children to access, usually in just two to three weeks. Plus it can also work as a parallel support alongside CAMHS.’

What schools say about us...
"St Wenn School are very grateful to I’m Ok, You’re Ok. The work you have done in our school has ranged from working with traumatised pupils after a wasp attack to intensive counselling on a one-to-one basis and some family intervention work. You have made a real difference in all cases. The impact has been an increased resilience of the pupils involved and you have given them a vocabulary to express their feelings appropriately. You have been insightful and sensitive and we wholeheartedly recommend your services!" Ingrid Bennett, Head teacher
