The crisis in children’s mental health and reduced centralised services make focussed specialist training for anyone supporting children’s health and well-being increasingly essential*
*See article - bottom of page

This Level 5 certificate training is being offered a second time in Jersey, to widen access to anyone already working in a professional or supportive role with children and/or young people under-18. It aims to deepen the knowledge and understanding of what causes emotional difficulty and what is needed from early interventions to really make a difference to improving children's lives now and in the future.

The course content is closely based upon the essential knowledge, skills and competences identified by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) for counselling children and young people and it is delivered under the ABC Awards & Certa Awards Quality Licence Scheme.

Who is this training designed for?
  • Counsellors with either past, current or desired experience of working therapeutically with Children and Young People, wishing to deepen their knowledge and competency
  • Counsellors with adult-oriented training wishing to acquire the ethical competences to say “Yes” to under-18s work - in either organisational or private settings
  • Anyone in another professional or support role with under-18s, (with relevant APL), such as a youth worker, social worker, family support worker or paediatric nurse, where a deeper understanding of childhood trauma, development and therapeutic support will enhance existing professional competence and confidence

Course overview
There are 18 training days, approximately two per month over the academic year (every month except December and April). Teaching and learning take place through interactive seminars, group activities and discussions and private study. Self-guided reading, reflection and writing on training themes are an important part of what enables participants to get the most from the course and to pass assessments. A participant not currently working therapeutically with under-18s, will need to undertake some supervised under-18 counselling or therapeutic support work prior to the final Viva Voce assessment. The Viva (speaking assessment by two experienced practitioners) takes place after the end of the taught course.

Training objective
The main objective is to enhance professional competence and confidence - through deepening the specialist professional knowledge and understanding which underpin safe and effective therapeutic practice with under-18s.

Content themes for weekends 1-9:
  1. Contexts relevant to counselling and therapeutically supporting C&YP
  2. Child development & what impacts it
  3. The Law, children’s rights & ethical practice
  4. The therapeutic process with C&YP
  5. Therapeutic approaches, interventions and settings
  6. Common presenting issues in C&YP
  7. Ethical systemic practice
  8. Working with risk
  9. Equality, diversity, difference and self-care

Commitment and collegial support
Throughout the training: students are encouraged to reflect, draw upon and share their own personal and professional experience. A wide variety of non-verbal and creative therapeutic interventions relevant to working with children and young people will be shared with and by everyone within group. Deepening links and mutual support among colleagues for the future is an invaluable part of the process.

Assessment
A Reflective Learning Journal of 500+ words on each course weekend. Two 3000-word essays on course themes, assessed and externally moderated at academic Level 5. A Viva Voce speaking assessment on under-16 therapeutic work plus Supervisor’s Report, following the end of the taught course and within 1 year of the end of the taught course.

Outcomes
Full attendance provides 108 hours' CPD training and successful completion of all the assessments leads to a Level 5 Post-Qualifying Certificate in Counselling Children and Young People (for already qualified counsellors) or a Level 5 Certificate in Working Therapeutically with Children and Young People (for other children's helping professionals).
This is endorsed by ABC Awards & Certa Awards* under their Quality Licence Scheme.
*For further info see: https://www.abcawards.co.uk/

Due to the vulnerable nature of under-18s, participants will also need to provide a current Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service certificate linked to C&YP client work before the qualification can be awarded.

Application process
Application and Referee forms can be downloaded from the bottom of this page. After receipt of a completed application, qualifying applicants will be offered an interview, generally by Skype/FaceTime which also provides the opportunity to find out more about the training and assessment to be sure that this is right for you. A place is offered following a successful interview and receipt of two suitable references.
